If you have missing teeth, implant dentistry is certainly an effective way to replace them. Implants can look and feel like natural teeth. They are comfortable and permanent. They use adjacent teeth for support and are an alternative to standard crown and bridge teeth replacement or dentures. Upon completion you’ll smile with confidence and chew food with ease.
The dental implant procedure surgically places a synthetic tooth root in the shape of a post into the jawbone. The “root” is usually made of titanium. It’s well-suited to pairing with the human bone. It’s used in hip and knee replacements. Once the post is fixed a replacement tooth is then fixed to the dental post.
The tooth can be either permanently attached or removable.
The ideal candidate for implants is a non-smoker who has good oral health, including a sufficient amount of bone in the jaw, and healthy gums with no sign of gum disease.
You won’t experience any pain during the implant procedure itself because you are under anesthesia. Once the procedure is completed and the anesthesia wears off patients tell us the pain level is less than the pain of a typical tooth extraction.
Implant surgery is sophisticated and designed to be as non-invasive as possible. But, an implant procedure is considered major oral surgery. We need to create an opening in your gum and jaw tissue to accept the implant. So, be patient as recovery is a process.
It is reasonable to expect mild discomfort and swelling near the implant site after any surgery. Antibiotics and anti-inflammatories are prescribed. Expect the swelling to decrease by the third or fourth day after your procedure.
You will be given a list of soft foods to eat for the first few days and you can expect to start eating your regular diet around day seven.
We urge you to arrange an interview to answer your questions and be informed about whether a dental implant procedure is right for you.. Dr. Kevin Granger is a dentist who “practices” compassionate dentistry for all his patients.
