Back in 2015 a recommendation for daily flossing was removed from the U.S. Dietary Guidelines. Immediately, news reports surfaced that flossing was not effective. We’re here to set the record straight.
“Flossing is an important oral hygiene practice. Tooth decay and gum disease can develop when plaque is allowed to build up on teeth and along the gum line. Professional cleaning, tooth brushing, and cleaning between teeth (flossing and the use of other tools such as interdental brushes) have been shown to disrupt and remove plaque.” This is from the Department of Health and Human Service to the American Dental Association in an August 4, 2016 statement.
Here at Smile Services of Virginia we encourage flossing. It just makes sense.
A toothbrush or electric toothbrush can only remove plaque above the gum line and on tooth surfaces. Flossing gets between the teeth.
Clinically, flossing has been shown to remove plaque, prevent gingivitis, tooth decay and lowers your risk of oral issues. Flossing also reduces inflammation, which is the body’s response to bacteria and there are over 500 kinds of bacteria that live in your mouth.
